SOCIAL SCIENTIST & DESIGNER

Visual Anthropology

…” Junior was selected in that raffle with five other kids to participate in a graphic design workshop that was part of a cultural initiative at that time. As a result of this workshop, Junior continued working with his recently acquired skills in graffiti, running a small business with his five ‘classmates’. “ Fieldnotes from Recife

Resource mapping

Maps are symbolic representations of attributes. I use maps to visualise the features of a particular region, a neighbourhood or street, identifying social relations, access to resources and technical facilities. Together with geographical interpretation, maps provide my work with a closer insight in political, economic, social, and environmental processes.

Workshop curation

The perfect workshop may be the one in which you hack a privatised water network, rebuild your town from scratch, debunk the smart city concepts, stop importing food, build your own cellular network, map a forbidden area, or simply come out with a new migratory policy. For that, you just need the perfect team.

EXPERTISE

Techniques

Some days you will find me handcrafting a customised architectural solution, building a 3D model in my computer or an electronic circuit for an art exhibition. Other days, you can find me welding or designing a book or a website. On crazy days, I might be doing all of the above while cooking at the same time.

Process knowledge

Innovation depends on the ability to merge the productive potential of both human and technical assets. I am used to get directly involved in the actual productive process,  expanding  my understanding of people and place and my ability to push change.

Rapid ethnography

I get to know people and cultures with engagement and reciprocity. My work as a researcher is based on a mutual interchange of experiences with my ‘informants’. In the field, wether this means my studio, the ‘cantina’ or the bush, the stories and tales of everyday become the data that I can later translate into my cultural and technological referents.

LAB 2

The LAB format combined discussion with hands-on activities as well as inputs from the participants’ own work and experiences. The topic was explored in three blocks: 1) import/export of Urban Patterns; 2) import/export of Technology; and 3) import/export of Knowledge.

ABOUT

I am a multi-disciplinary professional with a hybrid profile of Social Scientist and Designer. My work combines expertise in social sciences, product design, interactive electronics and print and digital publishing. This allows me to team up with other experts in ventures requiring both conceptual and technical implementation. It also brought me the important ability to adapt to specific local settings, which makes applied field research one of my strengths.
